The Method
The Return Inwards Method
The Method is how you move from recognising a pattern to responding differently: noticing it as it happens, exploring where it came from, and practising a new response until it becomes your own.
The Model and the Method
They answer two different questions, so we keep them apart. The Return Inwards Model explains how patterns may develop: the needs you were born with, the ways you adapted to get them met, and the Emotional Templates those adaptations became.
The Method is what you do with that understanding. It is the structured path from recognising a Template in the moment to a response that comes from who you are now, rather than from what you once needed to do to be okay.
What it is built on
- Insight starts change; practice completes it.
- Choice lives in the space between trigger and response, and that space can be widened.
- What was learned can be relearned. Patterns are habits, not identity.
- Every Template runs on an If–then rule, and a rule can be tested against what is true today.
- Understanding explains a reaction. It never excuses what the reaction does.
The Method's step-by-step stages are being finalised and will be published here.
Where to begin today
- Notice when a reaction is bigger than the moment explains, with the Intensity Mismatch check.
- Find the pattern you know best in Chase, Hide, Fight and Fold, then its Emotional Template.
Work through it with a coach
In coaching, we use the Model as a shared map and work through your own patterns at your pace.
