A knot in the stomach is your body bracing around its middle. Your stomach tightens or churns, your appetite drops, and it can feel as if something is twisted or heavy just below your ribs. In our model it often shows up before moments when you'll be seen, tested or judged, and it touches the need for Capability.

It is not your body being weak. It is your body preparing for something it thinks matters.

What it is doing for you

When you're under pressure, your body shifts energy away from digestion and towards readiness. Muscles around the belly tighten to protect it. That's part of why nerves so often show up in the stomach first, sometimes before you've even named what you're nervous about.

What it often travels with

A knot in the stomach often travels with fear of failing and with shame: the feeling that something about you might be found lacking.

It is common in the Capability Templates. In Capability × Chase, if I'm perfect, I'm enough, the knot drives one more check, one more draft. In Capability × Hide, if I don't try, I can't fail, it can be the feeling that makes you put a task off again. In Capability × Fold, others know better than me, it can come with the urge to hand a decision to someone else.

Proprietary model
A body response often arrives before the thought that explains it, so noticing the sensation can be the earliest way to catch a Template as it starts.

Back after six months

It's Monday morning, your first day back at work after six months of leave. You have a new pass, a desk you haven't seen yet, and a system that changed while you were away.

You couldn't eat breakfast. On the train your stomach is tight and churning. You go over the names you'll need to remember, and the half-finished project you left behind.

Outside the office door, the knot is so strong you think about getting a coffee first, then a walk round the block. Just ten minutes.

Instead you go in. A colleague waves. Someone has left a card on your desk. Your manager says, "No rush today, just find your feet." The knot doesn't vanish, but by eleven it has loosened enough for you to notice you're hungry.

The knot was preparing you to be judged. What was waiting was an ordinary morning.

One thing to notice

The next time you notice the knot, place a hand just below your ribs. Breathe in slowly so your belly rises under your hand, then breathe out a little longer. Do that a few times.

Then name the sensation plainly: "There's a knot in my stomach. I'm worried I won't be good enough today." You don't have to make it go away. Naming it lets you choose your next step, rather than letting the knot choose it for you.
